Lever Edge Frequently Asked Questions
- What are Leviton Lever Edge devices?
- Lever Edge is an innovative wiring device featuring easy termination for a faster, safer installation.
- What termination is used for Residential Lever Edge switches and outlets?
- A unique Spring Action Clamp terminal, where the stripped end of a conductor is inserted into the terminal and a manually operated integral lever applies clamping pressure to a spring mechanism, without the use of screws. The spring action clamp is NOT to be confused with QuickwireTM push-in (stab) or back-wire clamp terminations.
- What wires can be used?
- 15 Amp lever connectors work with both 14 gauge and 12 gauge stranded and solid copper wire only, no aluminum or copper clad wire. 20 Amp lever connectors work with both 12 gauge and 10 gauge stranded and solid copper wire only, no aluminum or copper clad wire.
- Can Residential Lever Edge switches and outlets be rewired if needed for future applications?
- Yes, one advantage of Lever Edge devices is that they can be removed and terminated again.
- Are Residential Lever Edge switches and outlets NEC compliant?
- Yes, Lever Edge is compliant with the National Electrical Code® (NEC).
- Why must copper only wire be used with Lever Edge devices?
- Copper is simply more conductive than copper-clad aluminum, meaning electricity can flow through it more easily while encountering less resistance. When choosing between solid or stranded, the solid wire offers higher current capacity and is stronger and better protected from damage. Stranded wires offer superior bendability and flexibility, making them easier than solid wires to route around obstacles.
- Why should copper-clad aluminum wire NOT be used?
- Copper-clad aluminum wire is not as strong as copper wire. It is more likely to break or split due to its aluminum core. Copper-clad aluminum wire has a lower level of electrical conductivity than copper wire. While it is still more conductive than aluminum, copper-clad Aluminum wire lacks the electrical conductivity of copper wire.
