ArcArrest®: Delivers Unmatched Industrial Arc Flash Risk Mitigation

Adding another layer of safety to industrial pin and sleeve devices, Leviton has launched the ArcArrest® family of plugs, connectors, inlets and receptacles. These switch-rated pin and sleeve devices provide a local way to disconnect and integrate a wall-mounted disconnect with a plug and connector, delivering both portability and flexibility. With ArcArrest devices, there is no exposure to live components or arc-flash, even when they are disconnected under load. Distributors who offer these new devices expand their reach and round out the offerings to contractors, installers, and building managers.

Eric Yarrows, Leviton Product Manager, explained, “Traditional wall-mounted disconnects require a technician to shut off power, wear appropriate PPE, and verify that the circuit is de-energized before servicing. In contrast, ArcArrest products are engineered to safely disconnect live circuits under load - enhancing safety, improving operational flexibility, and minimizing downtime. Depending on the facility’s needs, ArcArrest may offer a more efficient and reliable solution.”

Problem-Solving Technology

In harsh industrial environments, where safety and dependability are crucial, ArcArrest provides peace of mind in several ways:

  • Line-of-sight requirements: Per the National Electrical Code (NEC), a line-of-sight disconnect switch must be within 50 feet of the motor being served. The ArcArrest family of products provides a local means of disconnect and is rated for both branch and motor circuits. ArcArrest also supports lockout/tagout safety protocols.
  • Arc-Flash Concerns: The dead-front safety shutter design keeps any arc contained within the device, lessening risk and shielding users during load disconnects.
  • Disconnect Springs: Allow the user to disconnect in less than 10 milliseconds safely.
  • Ease of installation: Easily identified front and rear contact carrier and insert alignment makes installation a snap. Plug-and-play performance reduces installation and service time.
  • Code Compliance and UL Certification: ArcArrest meets requirements for UL2682 disconnects; a more rigorous test than UL1682, as it must be tested to withstand 6000 cycles while being operated live and under load.
  • Corrosion and Water Resistant: The silver contact tips endure wet and corrosive environments and provide low contact resistance even after oxidation and tarnishing.

Who Needs ArcArrest?

Leviton’s ArcArrest pin and sleeve devices are valuable to many industries that face challenges with dirt, moisture, and heavy electricity loads. ArcArrest devices are ideal for motor and branch circuit applications. ArcArrest devices safely power food and beverage processing facilities, data centers, oil and gas plants, automotive applications, manufacturing, packaging environments, and more. ArcArrest offers safety and increases productivity.

“One area we see a need for ArcArrest solutions is in facilities where conveyor belts are used, especially where there are multiple motors. If ArcArrest devices are placed in each section, operators can easily disconnect under load if a problem arises without having to wait for a technician, making it safer for employees,” Stated Eric Yarrows. “Additionally, OEM manufacturers integrating ArcArrest devices into their machinery enhance safety for end users.”

Leviton’s new ArcArrest devices support a critical movement toward safer industrial jobs. Choosing the best products prevents downtime, code violations, and keeps workers safe. Distributors who offer ArcArrest products expand these opportunities and give contractors a much-needed addition to the industrial disconnect arsenal.
