Turning an AFCI Pain Point into a Load Center Advantage
Leviton’s latest AFCI breaker technology gives distributors another reason to recommend the Leviton Load Center platform with confidence
Every electrical panel manufacturer offers AFCI protection, but not every AFCI story is the same. As contractors continue wiring increasingly complex homes filled with smart devices, advanced electronics, and connected appliances, AFCI performance can have a significant impact on the installation experience long after the panel door is closed. That's why Leviton has continued investing in AFCI technology as part of its broader commitment to delivering a differentiated Load Center platform.
For contractors, unwanted trips can mean callbacks, troubleshooting, frustrated homeowners, and time spent trying to determine whether the breaker is responding to an actual hazard or normal electrical activity. For distributors, those same concerns can become counter conversations, product questions, and hesitation around which load center solution a contractor should choose.
That’s why Leviton has continued investing in its AFCI breaker technology as part of the Leviton Load Center family. Rather than treating AFCI nuisance tripping as an unavoidable part of residential protection, Leviton developed enhanced AFCI technology designed to better distinguish between actual arc-fault conditions and the increasingly complex electrical signatures found in today’s homes.
“Contractors have to stand behind the products they install, and distributors have to stand behind the products they recommend,” said Sydney Cheatham, Marketing Manager, Residential Products at Leviton. “By improving AFCI performance within the Leviton Load Center platform, we’re giving distributors another meaningful reason to feel confident leading with Leviton.”
A Better AFCI Story for the Counter
Today’s homes are filled with LED lighting, variable-speed motors, smart appliances, switching power supplies, connected devices, and other electronics that can create complicated electrical signatures on residential circuits. AFCIs must evaluate those signatures while continuing to identify potentially hazardous arcing conditions.
“One of the biggest challenges for AFCI technology has always been distinguishing between normal operation and actual hazardous arcing,” explained Aaron Ard, VP of Product Management, Residential Products at Leviton. “As homes have become filled with increasingly sophisticated electronics, the job of accurately identifying dangerous arc faults has become significantly more complex.”
Leviton’s latest AFCI technology was developed to address that challenge. The platform uses shunt-based sensing to capture detailed current measurements and machine-learning-based modeling developed from extensive waveform data to help improve detection accuracy. These models were used during development to help Leviton engineers better evaluate electrical signatures, refine detection performance, and improve the breaker’s ability to distinguish between normal load operation and actual arc-fault conditions before the technology reached the market.
From Objection to Differentiator
For distributors, this matters because AFCI performance can directly affect the contractor experience after the sale. A load center may be selected at the beginning of a project, but the contractor’s long-term opinion of that platform is often shaped by what happens after the installation. If AFCI breakers create repeated questions, callbacks, or homeowner complaints, that frustration can reflect on the entire system.
Leviton’s enhanced AFCI technology helps turn that historical pain point into a point of differentiation.
“For years, AFCI nuisance tripping has been one of the concerns contractors have had to manage in the field,” Cheatham said. “Our goal was to help reduce unnecessary trips without compromising the protection AFCIs are designed to deliver. For distributors, that creates a stronger story when recommending the Leviton Load Center.”
Leviton’s validation testing demonstrated exceptionally high accuracy in distinguishing actual arc-fault conditions from normal load operation, helping reduce about 95% of unwanted nuisance trips while maintaining the intended level of protection.* The result is an AFCI breaker designed for the realities of today’s homes and the expectations of today’s contractors meeting UL 1699.
Innovation Already on the Shelf
Just as important, distributors do not need to manage a new product line to offer contractors the benefit of this enhanced technology.
Leviton has incorporated the AFCI improvements into production breakers already shipping as part of the Leviton Load Center family, without changes to part numbers or packaging. That means distributors can continue stocking and selling the AFCI breakers they already know, while contractors benefit from the latest advancements in Leviton’s arc-fault detection technology.
“This wasn’t about creating a new upsell or asking the channel to manage another transition,” Cheatham said. “It was about doing what’s right for the product and continuing to improve the Leviton Load Center platform for the distributors and contractors who rely on it.”
For the channel, that is a simple but important message: better technology, familiar products, and no added complexity.
A Stronger Load Center Platform
The Leviton Load Center has already created a differentiated position in the market with a clean, modern design, smart breaker options, energy monitoring capabilities, and an easy-to-install platform. Enhanced AFCI performance adds another important advantage to that story.
For distributors, it provides a practical talking point when contractors ask why they should choose Leviton. For contractors, it supports better installation and ownership experience. For homeowners, it helps deliver the arc-fault protection they expect with technology designed for today’s connected, electronics-filled homes.
“As electrical systems continue to evolve, the products inside the panel need to evolve as well,” Ard concluded. “Leviton’s latest AFCI technology reflects that commitment and gives the channel a more compelling load center solution for modern residential applications.”
