Safe and Sound

During National Electrical Safety Month and all year round, Leviton’s whole-home innovations assure channel members and homeowners alike of safe and reliable performance

May is National Electrical Safety Month, making it a great time for distributors, contractors, and homeowners to focus on the importance of safe electrical products and practices.

“Busy contractors aren’t looking for installations that create hazards for either themselves or homeowners and they don’t want their industry reputation damaged by poor quality products or safety issues,” confirmed Jim Doulong, veteran contractor and Construction & Technical Sales Specialist at Leviton. “Contractors and their residential customers want safe, reliable, easy-to-install products from a trusted manufacturer that stands behind its brand and people.”

As a respected industry leader for 120 years, Leviton fits that bill to a tee, with a broad range of innovative residential solutions designed with contractors in mind and loaded with beneficial features that prioritize safety, quality, convenience, and ease of installation.

Below are just some of the proactive safety measures built into Leviton’s residential products:

Home Electric Vehicle Charging on the Rise

Global electric vehicle adoption rates are accelerating, and distributors are well-positioned to benefit from this increase, especially for residential units. EV charging is becoming less of an optional standalone installation and more of an expected feature of many smart homes. Consumers want increased energy management, convenience, and safety, and Leviton brings the required solutions to the market.

With 120 years of reliable power solutions, Leviton’s experience and stability means their solutions are designed to meet your customers’ EV charging station needs, positioning your company at the top of the EV charging food chain. Leviton is a pioneer in the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) industry, offering tried-and-true EV solutions while bringing state-of-the-art products to market as they are introduced.

Electric Vehicle Solutions for Homeowners

Leviton devices, including switches, dimmers, receptacles, GFCIs and load centers, are designed to make life easier for homeowners and installing quality Leviton EV chargers and related accessories in the garage also makes sense. The My Leviton app connects all your Leviton smart devices.  Think more with Leviton.

Dimmers, Switches, and Receptacles

For homeowners, Decora Smart Switches for front porch lights enhance safety and security, while Decora Smart Dimmers for settings like living rooms automate lighting and help protect homes by making spaces look occupied at night. “These and other Leviton technologies light up dark areas and entryways for safe passage by homeowners while also helping to deter unwarranted activity,” Doulong said. He noted that some smart Leviton products incorporate geofencing capabilities and, when integrated with IFTTT, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Alexa routines, can trigger certain lights to go on or off when a mobile device enters or leaves a specific area (such as when a homeowner drives up to or away from their home). “In addition, family-friendly tamper-resistant receptacles will keep children safe from shock if they try to push something into the socket.”

For contractors, “wiring devices designed with Leviton’s breakthrough Lever Edge feature offer color-coded levers that enable installers to quickly determine which wire to connect to each termination point, minimizing the risk of callbacks for miswiring errors or insecure connections,” Doulong said. With a design that features rapid screwless grounding and no exposed metal parts, Lever Edge helps keep busy electrical contractors on the go and out of harm’s way. “Lever Edge makes wiring safer, easier, and up to three times faster than standard market products, and its built-in test ports enable contractors to perform necessary voltage testing safely,” Doulong said. “Ultimately, Lever Edge is intuitive for even less-experienced helpers and makes installing wiring devices as simple as ‘Push. Click. Done.’”

Doulong said that contractors will also appreciate Leviton’s smart GFCIs, which will notify homeowners of a trip via the My Leviton app and which won’t reset at their end-of-life or if they’ve been damaged or miswired, ensuring that homeowners are alerted to the device’s status and can act to replace them. In addition, Leviton’s entire line of residential GFCI receptacles is now HF-rated (high‑frequency rated) to ensure their interoperability with today’s broad range of high-frequency home appliances without the fear of nuisance tripping.

EV Charging

Thanks to Leviton’s high-performing EV charging technology, homeowners not only have full visibility to the status of their charging via the My Leviton app, but they can also set up alerts notifying them of any status changes, completed charging sessions, or faults.

“Leviton’s residential chargers are fully rated for both indoor and outdoor use, and for added safety and vehicle protection, radio-frequency identification (RFID) circuitry built into both the hardware and software ensures that the homeowner is the only one able to access that charger,” Doulong said. Leviton’s EV charger receptacles also feature thick, heavy-gauge contacts inside which allow for the safe use of “continuous use-rated” EV chargers. Leviton’s line of EV solutions also includes the recent addition of a new residential 50-amp EV outlet and enclosure for fast and safe charging outdoors.

Leviton Load Center

The award-winning Leviton Load Center, which can be customized with smart circuit breakers and the Leviton Whole Home Energy Monitor (LWHEM), simplifies energy management and is packed with safety features that benefit both contractors and homeowners.

Among other capabilities, “homeowners can turn breakers on and off from anywhere, manage energy use by programming breaker schedules, and engage in load shedding,” Doulong said, “and Leviton’s high-performing GFCI circuit breakers can also prevent reset if ground‑fault protection is lost.”

Leviton Load Centers additionally incorporate user-friendly color indicators in each rocker handle to indicate operating status as well as easy-to-read LEDs that display the fault type (AF/GF) when a breaker is tripped.

“Our smart breaker models can also provide a number of notifications that make homeowners aware of dangerous or nuisance situations, such as a breaker starting to draw power due to a leak in a sump pump or if a freezer full of food stops working,” Doulong noted. “The anomaly detection feature can also alert homeowners of fluctuations in power coming from their utility, which might signal a good time to unplug televisions or computers to avoid damage to those electronic devices.”

According to Doulong, contractors will find the Leviton Load Center to be very approachable, with light-colored breaker panels that improve visibility during installation and intuitive green and red bars that indicate that power is either on or off, offering a level of ease and comfort that a contractor or homeowner of any skill level can manage. “Fast installs are key for contractors, and the Leviton Load Center takes up to 25% less time to install than competing products,” he shared.

With any of the smart products, homeowners can also designate that their contractor be notified of any issues or anomalies through the My Leviton app, an added safety feature that can facilitate the contractor’s quick response.

“We view our channel members as partners and draw on their insights when we design and develop products, and we also have some of the best and most knowledgeable and accessible technical and customer support people in the industry,” Doulong said. “When contractors and distributors choose Leviton, they know they’ll be getting a high-quality product that’s engineered intuitively and with safety at the forefront.”

Ever since its founding in 1906 and for the next 120 years as well, Doulong confirmed, “Leviton is all about making the best products in the market and we take pride in being a renowned leader in quality, safety, and performance.”
