What is a power surge?

A power surge, or voltage transient, is a short burst of excess voltage in an electrical system.  The duration is typically in the thousandths or millionths of a second, sometimes recurring. It can be caused by lightning strikes, power outages, large appliances turning on or off, and faults in utility lines. Even small surges can slowly wear down electronics over time. 

How does a surge protector work? 

Most surge protectors rely on a component called Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV). Under normal conditions, electricity flows from the outlet to your device, but when voltage rises above a safe level, the MOV redirects the excess power away, usually through the ground or neutral. If the surge is strong enough, the protector may sacrifice itself to help protect your equipment.
