Smarter Protection: AFCIs Have Evolved
Leviton's latest AFCI breaker technology uses advanced sensing and machine-learning-based modeling to help reduce nuisance tripping while maintaining the protection contractors and homeowners rely on.
Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) play a critical role in helping protect homes from dangerous arc faults. But despite their proven safety benefits, AFCIs have developed a reputation over the years for nuisance tripping. As contractors know, this can lead to callbacks, troubleshooting, and frustration for both your team and the homeowners.
The reality is that today's homes are more electrically complex than ever before. LED lighting, variable-speed motors, smart appliances, switching power supplies, and other modern electronics all generate electrical signatures that AFCIs must analyze while continuing to identify potentially dangerous arc faults.
"One of the biggest challenges for AFCI technology has always been distinguishing between normal operation and actual hazardous arcing," explained Aaron Ard, VP of Product Management, Residential Products at Leviton. "As homes have become filled with increasingly sophisticated electronics, the job of accurately identifying dangerous arc faults has become significantly more complex."
To address this challenge, Leviton has developed a new AFCI platform that incorporates advanced sensing technology and machine-learning-based modeling trained using extensive electrical waveform data. The goal is straightforward: improve the breaker's ability to discriminate between normal appliance operation and potentially dangerous arc-fault conditions.
Looking Beyond Traditional Detection Methods
Traditional AFCI technology relies on electronic algorithms to analyze electrical waveforms and determine whether an arc fault may be present. While AFCIs have continued to evolve over the years, the growing number of electronic devices found in today's homes has increased the complexity of the detection process.
Leviton's latest AFCI technology approaches the challenge differently.
"The system was developed using extensive waveform data collected from both normal residential loads and known arc-fault conditions," Ard explained. "By leveraging machine-learning-based modeling during development, we were able to refine the breaker's ability to recognize the characteristics of actual arc faults while reducing the likelihood of misidentifying normal electrical activity."
Better Data Leads to Better Decisions
In addition to enhanced detection algorithms, Leviton's AFCI breakers utilize shunt-based current sensing technology to provide highly detailed current measurements.
"Any detection system is only as good as the data it's analyzing," continued Ard. "By improving how current is measured within the breaker, we're able to capture more accurate information about what's actually happening on the circuit. That gives the AFCI a stronger foundation for making trip decisions."
The combination of improved sensing and advanced modeling helps the breaker better distinguish between legitimate hazards and the electrical signatures produced by many of today's connected devices and appliances.
Proven Performance in the Real World
While the technology behind the product is sophisticated, the contractor benefit is simple: fewer headaches.
Leviton's validation testing demonstrated exceptionally high accuracy in distinguishing actual arc-fault conditions from normal load operation. Reported nuisance tripping from validation testing was reduced by about 95% compared to prior breaker technology.* Even better, the technology has already been introduced into production products without changes to part numbers or packaging, allowing contractors to benefit from this enhanced performance without changing product selection or installation practices.
"For contractors, the goal is confidence," explained Sydney Cheatham, Product Marketing Manager, Residential Products at Leviton. "When an AFCI trips, they want to know it's responding to a condition that deserves attention. By improving the breaker's ability to distinguish normal operation from potentially hazardous arcing, we're helping reduce unnecessary callbacks while maintaining the protection homeowners expect."
The Next Generation of AFCI Protection
As residential electrical systems continue to evolve, so too must the technologies designed to protect them. Leviton's latest AFCI platform reflects that reality, leveraging modern sensing and data-driven development methods to address one of the most common concerns contractors have expressed about arc-fault protection.
"AFCIs today are very different from the products many contractors first encountered years ago," Ard concluded. "We've invested heavily in improving detection technology so contractors can spend less time chasing nuisance trips and more time focusing on the job at hand."
A Better Contractor Experience
Leviton's enhanced AFCI technology is available across its AFCI and Dual Function breaker portfolio for the Leviton Load Center meeting UL 1699, providing contractors with advanced arc-fault protection designed for today's increasingly complex residential electrical systems. By combining innovative sensing technology with machine-learning-based modeling developed from extensive real-world electrical data, these breakers represent the latest evolution in AFCI performance and reliability.
"Ultimately, homeowners want safety and contractors want reliability," Cheatham added. "With our latest AFCI technology, we're delivering both. It's the same trusted protection contractors expect from AFCIs, now enhanced with technology designed to improve the overall installation and ownership experience."
