Leviton Forges Long-Term Partnership With a Residential Utility Company

Updating Data Center Infrastructure

Eversource

The Challenge

A large northeast-based utility company utilized outmoded data center infrastructure throughout its facilities in New England. The vendor who supplied the old infrastructure was unresponsive, and the client was looking to swap out its old systems to regain a competitive edge.

The Challenge
  • The pricing of the old systems was very competitive, so the client approached transitioning to another solutions provider with some trepidation. Any move would have to fit within their budget, while also supplying quality systems that would scale over time.
  • With the unresponsiveness of its old partner front-of-mind, the client wanted to partner with a provider that had a proven track record of excellent service.

The Solution

The client’s representatives reached out to a Leviton Manufacturing Representative, and together with Leviton Specification Engineers created a package that suited the client’s needs. This package included implementing the OPT-X™ E2X Engage global fiber system, chosen for its price competitiveness and performance, as well as planning a transition away from Method C network polarity towards Method B with Universal Polarity Cassettes.

The client initially requested Method C cassettes, but pivoted towards Method B on the Leviton Specification Engineers’ recommendation, simplifying polarity management.

Other products requested in the early stage of this project included 12-fiber OM4 MPO trunks, fiber enclosures, and Cat 6 cabling.

This project was fast-tracked along with two other data center projects, with the priority being getting the client’s data centers up to par as quickly as possible.

The Impact

Post installation, the client was impressed with the quality of the Leviton products, but more so noted the quality of Leviton’s service superseded its expectations. Representatives for the utility company voiced appreciation for the consultants’ product knowledge and apt guidance in transitioning to new systems. The client now standardizes on Leviton’s fiber and copper products in all its data centers, noting that it prefers the Leviton products for their quality, ease of installation, and flexibility in dynamic environments. The client has even worked with Leviton to create and recurrently update an enterprise standards document, which has created consistency across its facilities and has become the sole document for all aspects of IT installations.
