The Customer
As one of New York’s largest universities, creating an all-inclusive energy saving solution for St. John’s University was no small task. Through creative problem-solving and planning, Leviton retrofitted the campus with occupancy sensors, which are projected to save the school $13,293 in annual energy savings and provide a return on investment in a mere nine months.
The Challenge
St. John’s University desired a holistic energy upgrade for the entire campus. The goal was to become as energy efficient as possible with a cost-effective solution that delivered high annual ROI. The primary challenge of the project was its size and scope. Buildings had been built and upgraded at different times throughout the school’s history, meaning dozens of different fixture types to consider, and hundreds of unique applications and scenarios for lighting control around the school.
The Solution
Leviton and Energy Conservation and Supply, Inc. provided and installed occupancy sensor controls in hundreds of unique applications including classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, cafeterias, hallways and offices. All buildings and facilities had different ages and designs, which required an intuitive mix of wall switch and ceiling occupancy sensors in Multi-Technology, Ultrasonic and PIR versions.
The Results
The occupancy sensors are projected to save the university $13,293 in annual energy savings. With the initial occupancy sensor investment of $10,442, St. John’s University will see a full return on investment in only nine months from project completion. In addition to the financial savings, St. John’s University cut kWh usage by 73,848 kWh per year.
