Wire Management

For Personnel Safety

Mandatory Protection: Flexible Cord Strain Relief

Flexible cord strain relief is fundamental to safe wire management: To reduce hazards, flexible cords must connect to devices and to fittings in ways that prevent tension at joints and terminal screws.

Codes & Standards

The rules covering Wire Management in facilities are rather extensive and detailed. A condensed version of these rules appear below.

OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K

  • 1910.305(g)(2)(iii) - Flexible cords and cables shall be connected to devices and fittings so that strain relief is provided that will prevent pull from being directly transmitted to joints or terminal screws.
  • 1926.405(g)(2)(iv) - Flexible cords shall be connected to devices and fittings so that strain relief is provided which will prevent pull from being directly transmitted to joints or terminal screws.
2017 NFPA 70 Article 400 – Flexible Cords and Flexible Cables
  • 400.14 - Flexible cords and cables shall be connected to devices and to fittings so that tension is not transmitted to joints or terminals.
2018 NFPA 70E Article 205.14 – Flexible Cords and Cables
  • 205.14(2) - Strain relief of cords and cables shall be maintained to prevent pull from being transmitted to joints or terminals.

These devices and components will help you meet the provisions specified by OSHA and the NEC.

Strain-Relief Grips

Strain-Relief Grips are used to connect cable or flexible conduit to electrical enclosures and equipment. This prevents pullout and bending due to tension at the inner conductors at the point of termination.

Support Grips

Support Grips distribute the weight of the vertical or sloping runs of electrical and fiber optic cable, metal rods, tubing or hose over the entire length of the grip so that the cable is not subject to damage. A variety of hangers and bales are available. These grips are also available in stainless steel for additional corrosion-resistance.

Pulling Grips

Pulling Grips are reusable tools for pulling insulated conductors and bare wires; cable, nylon and wire rope; fiber optic cable; and other cylindrical objects.
