Data center infrastructure supports computing operations and enables the distribution of information within a data center. It includes key systems such as power, cooling, storage, and physical network infrastructure like switches and structured data cabling.

Data center cabling infrastructure consists of fiber optic and copper cabling that connect switches, routers, and other networking equipment. These systems typically include pre-terminated trunk cables, patch panels and enclosures, patch cords or fiber array cords, and cable management solutions for efficient routing and organization.

Compared to a traditional three-tier architecture, Spine-Leaf uses fewer aggregation switches and redundant paths between the access and interconnection switches, thus reducing latency and energy requirements. This architecture is becoming the standard for greenfield data centers. All access switches are connected to every interconnection switch, providing a redundant path. Traffic runs east-west, reducing latency between access switches. This is a very scalable fabric.

Fiber cabling solutions for modern data centers combine ultra-high-density connectivity, scalable structured cabling, and efficient cable management. Today’s data center designs increasingly rely on single-mode fiber (OS2) for backbone and inter-hall connectivity, paired with pre-terminated trunk cables and modular patching systems that simplify deployment and future upgrades.

High-density interconnect platforms use connectors such as MPO/MTP and newer very-small-form-factor connectors (VSFF) to maximize fiber counts while minimizing rack space consumption.

Equally important is the use of modular patch panels, cassettes, and high-density enclosures that support rapid moves, adds, and changes without disrupting adjacent connections. High-density fiber systems should include integrated cable management, bend-radius protection, and clear labeling to maintain network reliability as fiber counts scale.
