Can I Integrate Google Nest Home / Away With My Leviton Home / Away Modes

Google Assistance and Nest have the ability to determine if the home is unoccupied via voice command, tracking phone locations (Geo-Tracking), and the presence detection in the Nest Thermostat.  The My Leviton app has a Home and Away feature which is used to randomize lighting schedules when you are not home.  To learn more about the My Leviton feature, please read the article Can I randomize lighting to make my home look lived in when I'm away?  Customers have requested the ability to use the My Leviton randomization feature based on the Google Nest Presence detection.  While there is no currently no direct access to this feature there is a workaround using a dedicated My Leviton device to act as a bridge between the two services.  The best product would be the D23HL because it is silent, easy to install and low cost.  For this solution we will be turning the D23HL On and Off when Google changes Modes between Home and Away and then use the If This Then That (IFTTT) service to change the My Leviton Residence status between Home and Away.  Note, this will change the My Leviton status based on Google Assistant status but not visa versa.  A change to the residence home/away status in My Leviton will not change the Google Assistant status.

What You Will Need:

• A Google Assistant account connected to My Leviton

• An If This Then That (IFTTT.com) account connected to My Leviton

• A My Leviton lighting device dedicated to integrating both services
  • Recommended device: D23HL Dimming Plugin
  • Name the device 'Nest Bridge'

Getting Started:

• Enroll the bridge device into My Leviton and name it Next Bridge

• Configure Google Assistant to turn the My Leviton Nest Bridge On with the Google Assistant Away Routine and Off with the Home Routine

Adding If This Then That

The IFTTT service is free for the 2 applets we will need for this applications.  If you are not currently an IFTTT user you will need to setup an account.  Connect the IFTTT account to My Leviton,  For more information see the article Does Decora Smart® Wi-Fi work with IFTTT Platform?

Create an IFTTT Applet to use the My Leviton device called 'Nest Bridge' to change the My Leviton Home / Away status

• Choose Create to build a new Applet
  • 
• Choose Add next to 'If This'

• Search for Leviton under "Choose a service"
• Choose My Leviton

• Choose "Device tuned On"

• Choose the device Nest Bridge
• Press Create trigger

• Choose Add next to 'Then That'

• Search for Leviton under "Choose a service"
• Choose My Leviton

• Choose "Set a Leviton Residence's Status"

• Choose your residence
• Change to Away
• Press Create action

• Press Continue

Review the applet 

• If Nest Bridge turns on, then set My Home to Away
• There is an option to receive a notification any time the Applet runs
• Press finish 

Repeat the process in IFTTT

• If the Nest Bridge turns off set My Home to Home

When complete, the Google presence detection will cause the Nest Bridge to move between Home and Away.  The IFTTT service sees the Nest Bridge move between On / Off and will change the My Leviton status between Home and Away.  By syncing the services not only can your thermostat setback but key lights in you home can turn off at random times to help your home look lived in.
